Meet the Winners of the Discovery Project Countdown NYE 2016 Competition
Each time we hold a Discovery Project competition, we find ourselves floored by the bold creativity brought by the contestants. The competition for Countdown 2016 was fierce, but we somehow managed to narrow it down to two incredibly talented and well-deserving artists. We’re happy to welcome Jace Mek and Mahalo into the collective as winners of this year’s Countdown NYE competition. Both acts have already started to make waves in the industry and are well on their way to changing the face of dance music.
Jace Mek has a wildly unique style; when asked to describe it, he refers to Porter Robinson’s descriptor “weirdo house.” His fusion of shuffling, crisp and clean drum beats and wonderfully odd sound design has caught the ears of Buygore, Mad Decent and Main Course, while most recently scoring him an official remix of Malaa’s “Prophecy” on Confession.
Mahalo was exposed to the likes of Paul Oakenfold, Fatboy Slim and Groove Armada as a child, so it was only natural he would grow up with house music in his blood. Self-described as “liquid house,” his tunes are deep, seductive and remarkably emotive. Like Jace Mek, he has already released on an impressive list of labels spanning Toolroom, Spinnin’, Brooklyn Fire and Armada, who dropped his most recent tune, “Energy.”
These two ascending artists will set the tone for New Year’s Eve in proper fashion. Before heading out to Countdown, get familiar with the newest members of the Discovery Project family, and make sure to be in the building for the big moment.
Hometown: Los Angeles, CA
Currently Living: Jurupa Valley, CA
Origin of Name: My name is Cesar Jauregui. If you get the first two letters of my first and last name and then switch them around, “Jace” is born. As for the Mek part of my alias, the only thing I remember is translating my last name into a few different languages, and it showed up as “dinmek,” so I kept the Mek part.
Weapon of Choice: Steaks, distortion, and FL Studio.
Source of Power: Surrealism—I love it when dream and reality come together. It creates space for creativity.
Hometown: Kamuela, HI
Currently Living: Los Angeles, CA
Origin Of Name: The word mahalo is Hawaiian and means “thank you.” For my project, it’s a bit of homage to all the great people who have inspired me along the way.
Weapon of Choice: Cat Lewis.
Source of Power: Leftism and an espresso shot.
