Feel the Sexy Vibrations in This Exclusive Nocturnal Wonderland 2016 Mix From clncln
Callan Alexander, aka cln, is part of a legion of incredibly talented artists coming from Down Under. The 20-year-old’s soulful future beats are full of thick, expressive synths, gorgeously rolling arpeggios, and pitch-shifted vocals that express a level of creativity and maturity you’d expect from someone with decades of experience behind the boards. Even in an industry where breakout stars continue to be discovered at a younger age, cln has made some incredible career achievements in a very short time.
His debut single, “Better Than,” hit Hype Machine with a force worthy of a seasoned veteran, gaining him official remix duties for ODESZA and scoring a coveted spot on the AM Only artist roster. On top of his production credits, he is now on the verge of a successful DJ career, as he recently kicked off his first North American tour, which includes stops at Nocturnal Wonderland 2016.
To get you primed for his highly anticipated set, cln just dropped this 30-minute mix to give Headliners a taste of the sexy, feel-good vibes he’s set to bring to Nocturnal Wonderland at the Upside-Down House, curated by Insomniac Records.
We chatted with cln about his hands-on approach to production and how nature inspires his sound.
There is something decidedly different about what you’re producing. Where and how did your sound develop?
I don’t really know! I started out making house music and some really bad dubstep. Then my music tastes changed, so I changed my style of production. Listening to artists like SBTRKT and FlyLo helped shift my direction.
You control every aspect of production in your tunes, from creating synths to mastering the final version. Why is this approach so important to you
There’s nothing wrong with getting help to mix and master. I just really enjoy the nerdier side of music production. I think lots of other producers enjoy it, too. It takes a really specific personality type to enjoy making music on a computer for hours at a time.
Even though it is electronic-based, there is something very organic about your music. Does nature inspire your music?
I really enjoy hiking and camping. It’s how I relax and clear my brain. I don’t really set out to create tracks that sound like they are influenced by nature; I think it just happens subconsciously.
What’s your musical background, and how did you initially fall in love with electronic music?
I’ve been playing piano since I was very young. I never really enjoyed practicing, though; I much preferred messing around with my own chords or melodies. I got into house music and dubstep when I was around 12 or 13. I’ve always been very into computers as well, so combining music and computers was pretty natural.
You made the move from South Africa to Brisbane, Australia. Why did you decide to move?
I moved over in late 2008. I was 13 years old, so I didn’t really have much say. My parents decided to move because most of our family had already moved to Brisbane.
Besides getting to play music, what are you looking forward to most about your first tour in the States?
I can’t wait to be a tourist! The only part of North America I have seen before is Florida, and that was when I was around 4 years old. I want to see and eat as much as I can.
