The EDC Spirit Is Alive in NYC
As a recent transplant to New York City, I can say first-hand that many of the stereotypes are proved wrong every day. Yes, that outrageous Bronx accent is real. Sure, that cab might just nudge you if you don’t hustle your ass across the street. And for reals, this place never sleeps. But it’s also full of surprises. Many people here are just plain nice. They’ll help you when you need it. And if you’re in the right place at the right time, they might give you flowers.
Was it an incongruous surprise when a merry band of Headliners descended upon Manhattan’s Union Square yesterday to hand out daisies to unsuspecting passersby? It was, and it wasn’t. Go to any high-traffic area in any major city, and you’ll likely be bombarded with flyers, sales pitches, bible verses, and buskers. But a free daisy?
“What do you want from me?” you could see some wondering. However, most recipients took their flowers without even breaking a step, a radiant smile instantly spreading across their face. Some stopped to ask what it was for. Others knew instantly from our EDC hats and shirts, and dance music fans were ecstatic to discover we also had a few passes to give away.
As we regrouped and departed for Penn Station, the Flatiron Building, and other points across the city, I stopped to take in the bustling square on this gorgeous May day. Mothers pushed strollers. Nine-to-fivers hit the food carts on their lunch breaks. Tourists strolled around, taking it all in. In many a hand or behind an ear, one could spot a white, yellow or pink daisy, and on many a face could be seen a lingering smile.
