We’ve put together some of our favorite tunes from Discovery Project alumni for you. We do this regularly, so keep checking in with the Alumni Tracks You Should Know series to see the latest and greatest from our Discovery Project artists.

DIV/IDE “Gettin’ Money”

This duo manages to give the subs a serious workout on every tune—even though they are thousands of miles apart. Nevertheless, they are keeping it together with a sound that ranges from bass house to Jersey club. On their latest, they’ve decided to flex a little hood vibe with this filthy trap and dub hybrid named “Gettin’ Money.” The nasty mid-low synths may be the star of the show, but the real anchor is the deep, slow-burning 808 that keeps things in the groove.

Grensta & J Worra “Phases”

Grensta is part of the growing legion of Bay Area producers who are putting San Francisco back on the map as the one of the epicenters of house music. With the help of the undeniable skills of L.A. homie J Worra, he’s encompassed the new sound of West Coast house in five minutes and 40 seconds of mutated basslines and driving, syncopated rhythms. Keeping things minimal has allowed the hypnotic synthline to shine, while not overpowering the dirty bassline. And somehow—such is the case with much of Gren’s music—he has managed to create a tune that is deep, yet still a clear primer for prime-time play.

Groove Cartel “Just Like Dat”

If you ask a house purist what’s missing from today’s scene, they will answer (quite loudly, I might add) that it’s the quintessential groove. This duo, made up of drummer Cary White and producer/DJ William Gonzalez, have found that old-school aesthetic on which the foundation of house music was created. However, they’ve added a modern twist to it, allowing it to fit right in on today’s dancefloors. In a world where the average tune is four minutes or less, they’ve extended an infectious cut that continues to expand into a frenzied peak of warm, gooey bass, old-school stabs, and a synth hook that will keep you on your feet.

Destructo & Wax Motif ft. Pusha T & Starrah “Catching Plays”(Convex Remix)

Holding tight to the hip-hop intro, Convex has morphed Destructo and Wax Motif’s G-house slammer into a broken-beat bass monster. Amping up the energy and filth by about 100 percent, the first drop is upbeat, funky, and nasty AF. You really aren’t ready for that second drop, though—it breaks into a head-banging half-time trap beat that matches the hip-hop aesthetic of this tune with perfection.

Kehlani “CRZY”(Gladiator Remix)

Kehlani’s silky-sweet flow gets a re-rock from DP alum Gladiator. Taking things one deeper, they lay the love heavy with an intricately designed beat that holds its own, in addition to doing so much justice to Kehlani’s gorgeous vocal gymnastics. The reason why their version works so well has much to do with the emphasis they place on the hip-hop tip, and how the playfully rhythmic backbone and delicate synthwork weave in and out of Kehlani’s voice in a way that brings a seductive nature to the tune.
