Having come up through the ranks at a startling rate, Australian Sonny Fodera is now leading from the front. Over the last couple of years, the man originally turned on to the dance by Derrick Carter has fomented his own groove-driven brand of house that now resonates around the world. His most complete artistic statement to date came in the form of his excellent debut full-length, Moving Forward, in 2014. Featuring a heavyweight selection of collaborators and coming on Green Velvet/Cajmere’s tastemaking Chicago label Cajual Records, it paired plenty of bouncy bass with lush synths, fresh vocals and feelgood melodies that veered from the dancefloor to the beach and back again.
Keeping up the pressure in 2014, that LP was followed up with compilations on Deep Down and Defected that found Sonny adding his remix flair to a bunch of classics, and after that came sophomore effort After Parties & Aeroplanes. Again a collaborative affair featuring the likes of Doorly, Gene Farris and Cajmere, it was a more jacking, sharp-edged treat designed for maximum dancefloor impact, but was also stuffed with unforgettable vocals that again saw Sonny stepping up his game.
As well as these high-impact works, Sonny has also turned out a consistently excellent string of EPs on labels like Suara, Defected and Farris Wheel Recordings, as well as his own Beatdown, that continue to win him ever more fans around the globe. Never was this more true than with “Let Go,” a collaboration with Cervendos that sat pretty in the Beatport Deep House Top 10 for no less than 12 weeks in 2014. Though inspired by peers such as Dusky and Claude VonStroke, Sonny has his very own modern house sound that is refreshingly out on its own and puts to good use the music technology and electronic production courses he took at the University of Adelaide as a youth.
As a result, of course, Sonny is a hugely in-demand DJ. It was his smooth technical skills in the booth that first won him the affections of Green Velvet, and nowadays he weaves his tight, seductive sets featuring all colours of the house spectrum everywhere from Footwork Toronto to Warung in Brazil, Cielo in New York City to Pacha, Sankeys, DC10 and Ushuaia Tower in Ibiza, as well as We Are FSTVL and many others. The future is just as bright as the past for Sonny, who was born in Adelaide, Australia, and has lived between there, Ibiza, the USA and the UK since, though he is currently settled in London. It means he is fully focussed on the next chapter, which already promises to be a thrilling one for his fans, with a new album due on Cajual, as well as more EPs on influential labels Visionquest and DIRTYBIRD.
Since joining forces eight years ago, Ben Prok and James Fitch, better known as Prok & Fitch, have established themselves as leaders in house music, consistently producing Beatport Top 10’s, managing their own flourishing label Floorplay Music, and smashing clubs worldwide with their alluring, unadulterated sound.
In the DJ booth, it's all about the groove. The boys have worked with house legends Todd Terry, Roger Sanchez, Ben Westbeech and Moby, with remixes garnering support from major players Carl Cox, Pete Tong, Tiesto, and Steve Angello.
Prok & Fitch’s silky smooth rhythm and captivating bass lines are something to be celebrated…it’s no wonder the duo have graced the decks at some of the most prestigious clubs in the world like Space (Ibiza), Sankeys (Manchester), Cielo (New York), and regularly spinning sets at the legendary Ministry Of Sound (London).
Prok & Fitch are constantly setting fire to radio airwaves worldwide, with a recent feature on Pete Tong’s Essential Selection on BBC Radio 1 and guest spots on Roger Sanchez’s radio show. Their own Floorplay podcast attracts tens of thousands of listeners a month, proving their magnetism is difficult to ignore.
Whether they’re keeping it deep and dark with underground crew Nic Fanculli and Coyu, or commanding main rooms for the masses with Umek and Axwell, Prok & Fitch’s versatility and acceptance across genres has been key to their success to date.
The boys rock stages across the world, Ultra Music Festival in Miami, Global Gathering (UK), Sunburn Festival in Goa, and four shows for the world renowned Sensation White, selling out 20,000 person stadiums in the US, Thailand, and Taiwan.
In between crushing stages across continents, the pair still found time to release the 30-track mammoth compilation ‘Toolroom Knights’ on Toolroom Records, and have recently started work on the forthcoming Toolroom Reset Album due for release at the end of March.
Prok & Fitch continued making their mark on North America with a packed out January “Raw Cut” tour, heating up dance floors in prominent clubs that have included, BPM Festival (Mexico), New City Gas (Montreal) Vessel (San Francisco) and many more.
This year will prove to be their best yet, with the duo putting in more studio time than ever. Expect Prok & Fitch to deliver four smoking hot new tracks throughout the year, and a massive collaboration with Toolroom boss Mark Knight coming soon. If the pair’s swift, steep, and unapologetic rise to success in the past few years is any indication, this year will shatter limits in quality and creativity.
After a spectacularly successful intro to the scene which saw Weiss (pronounced ‘Vice’) being championed by the likes of Groove Armada, Loco Dice, Green Velvet, Kenny Dope, Pete Tong & more, the hit single ‘My Sister’ rotating on BBC Radio 1, whilst staying strong in the Beatport top ten chart for over four months, and countless gigs all over Europe, it was plain to see that Weiss was here to stay.
Following this lead, Weiss has risen to even greater heights, with his releases inspiring support from the most respected & freshest names in the industry, including Gorgon City, Shadow Child, Shiba San, Claptone, Hot Since 82, Claude VonStroke, Tensnake, Bontan and more.
'Guitar Man' stormed up the Beatport charts and remained an essential in clubs for months after its release; whilst Pete Tong continues to champion Weiss' remix of Green Velvet & Riva Starr's 'Robots'. The 'Weiss City' series have been picks of the summer, with tracks like 'I Feel Better' proving to be fan favourites at the likes of We Are FSTVL. Similarly, his remixes of MK's iconic 'Always', Tube & Berger's soulful 'Come On Now (Set It Off)' and Deadmau5’s anthemic ‘Raise Your weapon’ have set the industry alight with accolades from all corners of the scene.
With the new year comes an even stronger sound, ‘Our Love’ follows on from where ‘I Believe’ left off, a driving onslaught of Jackin’ beats with that irrepressible Weiss bass rumbling through, premiered by Pete Tong on Radio 1 with a frenzy of hype around its release.
Trends in dance music will always come and go, and during a peak in the deep synth sound Weiss is an ambassador for real House music, championing the original Jackin’ Chicago house sound, and with a string of exciting projects, collaborations and hotly tipped releases on their way, expect nothing but the hottest and most underground cuts from this rising star…
