Subconxious

Origin: None

Hometown: Los Angeles, CA
Currently living: San Diego, CA
Origin of name: The subconscious mind is a composite of everything one sees, hears and any information the mind collects that it cannot otherwise consciously process to make meaningful sense. Musically, it refers to experiencing sound on a deeper, more emotional or spiritual level.
Weapon of choice: Music, of course. The best way to express the inexpressible.
Source of power: The sun, good music, food. Life is the biggest influence of all.

What advice would you offer someone thinking about entering the Discovery Project competition?
Definitely go for it. Even if you don’t win, it’s just more motivation to try harder and step your game up.

Blurb yourself:
Subconxious is a musical journey through time and space—a light and fresh experience at its basis, becoming deeper and complex as it progresses, characterized by a perfect balance of very intense frequencies.

What is your ultimate career dream?
To play EDC Las Vegas, of course. Really, though, to play at EDC has been a lifelong goal.

Are you impulsive with your work (in the studio and/or DJing), or do you have a sketch in mind before you start?
In the studio it can go either way, but usually I start with an idea I can hear in my head like a drum pattern or melody that I try to re-create. It almost always comes out completely different, but better in a way. I now have new ideas and inspiration to work with that I couldn’t have imagined before. Experimentation is key.

How, if at all, does listening to music figure into your creative process? What’s the last song you heard that made you drop what you were doing and go into the studio?
It helps a lot when I’m feeling uninspired or stuck on a song. Or when starting something new, I’ll listen to a bunch of different music to get the ideas flowing.

What’s the most important piece of gear in your studio, and why?
Definitely my laptop, because that is my studio, essentially. Good monitors and headphones second. Other than that, I don’t really have any other gear besides Ableton Push. Being able to make music anywhere is crucial.

Do you have a list of people you’d like to collaborate with (from musicians to designers) in the future? Who are some of the people, and why?
Would absolutely love to work with some of my favorite producers, like Yasutaka Nakata, Dam-Funk, Bassnectar, Rustie, and the list goes on. I just really love these guys and look up to them musically. I love to collaborate with anyone, really; there’s so much to learn from working with other people.

If we pressed Shuffle on your iPod while you went to the bathroom, what would you be embarrassed to come back to us listening to?
I wouldn’t be embarrassed, but you might look at me weird with all the J-pop, K-pop and cheesy electro pop on there.

What sound or noise do you love?
Love fat saw basslines, lazers, bleep bloops, water splashing—everything, really.

What should everyone just shut the fuck up about?
“EDM” as a term. It’s just so vague and outdated. It doesn’t even describe everything. Pretty much all music could be considered “EDM” these days, by definition. “EDM” is not a genre.

What gets you excited when you think about the future of electronic music and club culture?
I get really excited thinking about what the music of the future will sound like and how it will evolve from where it’s at currently. None of the music we listen to today would exist if it weren’t for the music of the past, and so to think of what today’s music will contribute to the music of the future is very exciting. Technology has a lot to do with it; we really do live in an exciting time.

Do you have any memorable moments from past EDCs or any other Insomniac party?
Definitely. I’ve been to EDC every year since 2005, back when it was still at the NOS Center in San Bernardino. It’s crazy to see how far it’s come and how fast it’s grown. Every year seems bigger and better than the last. From the very memorable years at the L.A. Coliseum to its new home at the Speedway, it’s just mind-blowing to see how much it’s grown. I think it’ll be really interesting to see where it goes from here, as electronic music is bigger than ever.
